Question
Hi Nancy,
I'm interested in purchasing a Brittany Spaniel.  I had two Golden Retrievers, which were great dogs, but I would like something similar but smaller and with less hair.  I heard that Brittanys can be hyper and need to be exercised every day.  Can they be placed in a kennel for a few weeks a year without going crazy?  I'm also considering a Cairn Terrier or a Scotty.   I had a Westy once which I liked?  I looking for a friendly dog who likes to go on long walks.  I will appreciate any advice you can give me.
Thanks, George

Answer
HI,
The Brittanys that I have come in contact with have been great dogs.  They are a bit hyper sometimes, but have always seemed well mannered.  Another dog you might consider is a boykin very similar to a Brittany, not AKC however, but on the list.
A cairn would be my pick over a Scotty.  They are more friendly.  Scotties are more aloof.  There is also a border terrier and a welsh terrier; stay away from the Lakeland terriers they are snippy.
If you get a cairn or border terrier,  keep them on a high fat diet or supplement with a large dose of Omega three fatty acids.  The dog foods today are very low fat and not good for the wire coated terriers.
