Question
Hi there, I have a 7 month old yorkiepoo puppy who is very affectionate and playful. For the first few months house breaking her was fairly easy she would tell us that she needs to go by sitting at the door and she began to go potty outside until recently. She was spayed in the past month and this is when the pooping and peeing began. At first she was peeing in the house because she had a bladder infection. Since she was suffering from a bladder infection we did not really discipline her when she would urinate in the house. Now she is continuously urinating AND pooping in the house. I will take her out for half an hour and she won't go and as soon as I take her inside she goes. I have been trying to discipline her by using the same technique i used when I first got her but it doesn't seem to be working. I have tried everything and don't know what else to do. I am loosing hope and I am worried that I may have to give her up because she is becoming a very big stress in my family instead of being a joy and a pleasure. I hope you can help me with my problem.

Answer
Natasha;
While she has been sick, the role reversal has changed where she was in the environment too much time in the house.
This signals her that it is okay for her to be in her environment "Your House" to do her business...
Now, since she is better health wise, she needs to be taken out for long intervals to reverse the idea that her environment is "Outside" not "Inside"!
This way, with time, she will learn that she goes outside for "Potty"!
You will have to set a "Exercise area, or Pen" outside for her to go...do not take her back inside till she does her thing...then "Praise Praise Praise" Dogs learn from REPEAT PATTERNS....Scolding her only gives her more Negative reinforcement...that is not training her to know what You Do Want from HER!
So, go this route...since it has been some time now in the house...it will take her a while to learn.
But, eventually things should turn around. Patience at this point, as she has had a setback with the infection.
But, don't remove her back into the house until she does both Pee and Poop! Give her some toys and a bed, or dog house to be in that area while she is out there for her to be comfortable, and to learn "THIS IS HER ENVIRONMENT" OKAY TO DO WHAT I NEED TO DO OUT HERE!!!!
Best regards,
Melissa
