dintroducing puppy to submissive old house dog

Question
Hi.  As to the subject - that says it all.  We lost our 12 yr old female alpha 10 months ago.  the 11 year old male was always submissive to her.  3 weeks ago I found a stray male that we are treating for mange, worms, etc.  He is lovely and affectionate and grateful but is dominating the older house dog.  How can I correct this problem?  The old boy is being really good but is feeling left out.  I'm not sure how to handle the situation.  Puppies are puppies and now that his little fella is being fed properly and nurtured he's full of himself though I'm training him to sit, come and he's already housetrained - very smart.  Any advice to spare the older dog his peace of mind?  Thanks.  J

Answer
Hi Jaqi;
You don't say how ol this puppy is, but the sooner he learns YOU are the bos, not him, the better.
Neutering him will tone him down a little as well and helping to protet his health, and scolding him for bossing the older one, and obedience training is needed too.
Look at it the way you would if you had a child, and adopted an abused child that tried to dominate your child and be the boss.
You have to show the new one that his position in the family is not threatened, but that YOU are the alpha and there is not room for another one, and at the same time, you need toi reassure the older dog he is not going to have to be picked on by this squirt.
I have a Lhasa that wants to dominate, and and australian Shepherd that treats him like he is his mother and protects the little bossy bottom from my correcting him.
Max is 8 years old now, and we have had him since he was 6 weks old, and he STILL tries to boss Rowdy around. Rowady would let him.
I chew him out and put him in time out for a half hour. Usually, when  just say "MAX!!! Do you want to go to time out?" He straightens up and ats right.
