How Many Puppies?

Question
HI there
I have 2 shih tzus, a boy and a girl, and recently they mated...I have worked out a rough estimate of a due date for pupppies (if she is pregnant) of 26th June.
These little characters are our babies...so we wanted to clear up some of our worries and ask a few questions...like, how many pups can a shihtzu have???...and are there any special measures we should take???...do we separate Dad from her in labour and from the puppies??? because they are very close.
They both have wonderful temperments, she is a mummy's girl and quieter than he is, and he is an attention seeking, flambouyant little show off, who I would say is closer to my my husband...they are both adorable...and we love them and are looking forward to the birth...

kind regards
Snow

Answer
My first question is, why did you let these dogs breed? There are many dogs in the shelter (many of which are shih-tzus or shih-tzu crosses) which are looking for homes. I reccomend you spay and neuter your dogs after the pups are born. Also, I reccomend you require the pups also be spayed and neutered. Many people buy shih-tzus for breeding only and don't use them as pets. This can be a profitable busines. Of course repuatable breeders don't make a profit, usually losing money. They do it as a hobby and put alot of thought and dedication into every litter.
As for how many puppies they will have, I'm not for sure but have asked around for you and have found 3 as an average to be the most popular answer. Take her to the vet, get her shots up-to-date, get her clipped, especially her tummy, and ask a vet to do an ultrasound on her. This way you will know for sure how many pups she will have.
I have a reccommended book for you to read. Check it out of the library, buy it, whatever. It is a must-read if you are expecting pups. It is Successful dog breeding : the complete handbook of canine midwifery by Chris Walkowicz. I hope you luck and please spay and nueter your dogs after. There is no reason for you to breed them again.

I hope I was a help. Come back if you have anymore questions.
