German Shepard Training

Question
I am in the proscess of getting a female German Shepard.  I will probably get her from a breeder that our local law enforcement uses.  I've had and been around many breeds of dogs in my life from Walker Hounds, Collies, Begals and a few others.  I have never had a German Shepard, but my father did many yeras ago.  They are spectacular animals, so very loyal.  I am thinking about training her in German so only I can give her commands.  Do you have any advise that could help me when I start working with her?

Thanks, Walter

Answer
Hello, Walter. German Shepherds are wonderful dogs. I have a 9.5 month old right now, as a matter of fact.

The law enforcement breeder that you refer to, do you know what bloodlines of dogs he/she has? Making sure your dog comes from good stock is of utmost importance. There are so many German Shepherd breeders that are quite simply ruining the breed. Whoever you get the dog from, make SURE the dog is not out of American show lines. This will reduce your chances of getting a dog with health and temperament problems, because the majority of American breeders of German Shepherds breed for looks, not for soundness. Stay away from breeders whose dogs have a sloping back and it looks as if their behind is almost dragging the ground when they trot. You want a dog that looks like a dog, not a triangle where the rear is the pointed end.

Ok, enough of that; you asked about training, didn't you?! Well, my advice depends on what you want the dog for. What are you wanting to train her to do? You can e-mail me at blueridgerescue@gmail.com
