QuestionI have two 5 year old poms and I'm considering trimming them down to about 1.5 inches. Our summers are so hot and humid and I constantly worry about them overheating. What is your opinion on trimming a double-coated breed? Does the full coat really insulate them from the heat? Thanks for your help.
AnswerI see nothing wrong with trimming down any breed if that is what the owner wants to do. No, I do not feel that a full coat insulates them from the heat; I think it is like wearing an enormous fur coat on a hot summer day. Schnauzers are also a double-coated breed, and I have noticed the difference when I have taken one in full coat and then either clipped it down or stripped it out. In one instance, there is a panting dog, and in the other, there isn't. All that hair just makes for one really hot dog.
