hind itching and now maybe pain?

Question
two weeks ago my six year old lab began to scratch and try to nibble at her hind end just above her tail.  The weather has been changing and our heaters are kicking in. Her water intake increased a bit as well.  She was still running and playing around but would either get on her back to relieve the itch or walk against the wall.  I applied an anti itch spray to the area and noticed that she developed a sore where she was able to reach and nibble at.  The sore is healing however she was lying down and I called her to go out and she did a little yelp.  I noticed that she was favoring her left leg and would just sit there.  She was able to walk on it but she didn't want to.  It is the side that she has been trying to get to.  Is it possible that with her sudden jerking movements to relieve the itch that she pulled something?

Answer
Hi E.D :-)

Yes it is possible that your Dog may of pulled something but it is difficult to say. Keep a eye on her leg and how well she is walking around, movement wise and if there is no improvement or she is still yelping take her to the Vet within 2 days. Best to have her checked over to be on the safe side. :-)

As for the sore on her hind area, I would recommend that you purchase some Daktacort Cream from your Pharmacist and apply this cream 2-3 times a day for 7-9 days and this will clear up the sore and any bacteria or fungai present there so it will also prevent a infection from setting in.

It sounds like the anti-itch spray you used on her has caused a reaction. I never touch these sprays from Pet Stores because they usually never work or have some kind of reaction. Because of this, I recommend you bathe your Dog in a non-perfumed Shampoo and wash her hind area fully to remove ALL of the anti-itch spray and see if this makes a different to her scratching and biting.

Scratching/nibbling and biting of the tail and hind area can be a indication of Worms and Fleas. I also recommend you purchase a Worming tablet from your Vet and also a Flea product from your Vet. Do not use Pet Store bought products as once again, these do not work.

Take care and all the best and please leave me a comment.
