Question
I have a 4 mo. yorkie and need help in potty training. We are at work all day and have to keep her in a dog crate because she jumps over a door guard, she is very hyper,so we can't leave her out because of safety reasons, she is in the crate for 10 hrs. a day.In the crate I have her food, water, and potty pad.she pee-pees on the pad but when shes out of the crate she won't use it.If you can help me out that would be wonderful.Thank you.

Answer
go to petsmart  or petedge.com and get an ex pen.  A crate is too small to leave a terrier in for 10 hours a day.  Then place the same things in there that you have in the crate.   Are you saying that when you let her outside of the house, she won't go?  That is because you have trained her to go in her crate.    She has been trained to go in her bed,  if you get an ex-pen  you will be able to retrain her to keep her bed clean and  she can now go in other areas (she doesn't have to mess her sleeping area)
Start all over.   Make sure the floor is covered with pads but leave about a 4 inch space then put her bed and her food and water.   As she gets a favorite place to pee, start picking up the unused pads until you can narrow it down to one or two pads.   When you come home, take her out.  If she doesn't go, then bring her back in and carry her around.  Then give her some food and water and take her out again.   If she doesn't go carry her around, again.  keep repeating this until she absolutely has to go and then praise her like she just saved your life.  Unfortunately, one time isn't going to get the message through to her.  So you must do this constantly for about a month until she unlearns the behavior and relearns the clean behavior.
good luck nancy
