seperation anxiety/grooming

Question
I have a female silky terrier/maltese mix, she has long hair like a silky but does not shed or seem to grow.  recently she has developed many mats in her fur regardless of bathing and every time i try to brush her she gets very upset and squirms.  i dont know what choice i have but to have her shaved at this point, my question on this is do you think her hair will grow back or will it stay short because it doesnt seem to grow?  my other question is that i work very long shifts and i feel horrible kenneling her at home for 12 hours at a time because she wines and chews whatever she can reach.  I have recently found a male silky/maltese mix who is 10 weeks old. i'm wondering if having a play mate would help her with the seperation anxiety or if it would cause more problems because she's been my spoiled baby for the last year.

Answer
I would talk to the groomer first, but I think the hair would eventually grow back.

I am afraid the second dog would just make things worse.  I often suggest finding somebody to give the dog a walk, a neighbor or professional dog walker.  doggy day care is a good idea too.
