blisters on dog

Question
My dog has horrible blister clusters on the top of his nose and inner edges of his ear!  They came on suddenly and are seeming to get bigger within 24 hours.  They are draining pus and blood, not a great deal though.  They seem to itch a little. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Danielle,

It sounds like it could be an autoimmune disorder, or a bacterial infection, or any one of several things, ranging from mange (Sarcoptes Mites) to an over growth of yeast.

Try to keep the affected areas clean. Wash with a clean cloth, and a little warm water and mild soap. Be sure to dry the areas very well. If your dog will allow it, try using a hair drier on the warm setting. If not pat dry with a clean towel. (don't rub, since it aggravate the itch).

You need to have your dog seem by your veterinarian because treatment can vary greatly depending on the diagnosis. Because your dog is itching, and has the possibility of developing secondary skin infections from these draining sores, you need to get your dog treated much sooner, rather than later.

Be patient with the vet. Sometimes, because your dog can't talk, diagnosing a problem isn't simple. It can take a return trip to back to the doctor. Monitor your dog's reaction to the prescribed treatment, and don't hesitate to contact the vet if you are not seeing improvement of the condition.

I hope I've been a help,
Best of luck
Patti
