Patellar Luxation

Question
Hi there,
I have a 5 year old male Bichon Frise called Bobby. He was recently diagnosed with patellar luxation in both back knees, however his right knee is much more severe. I'm curious as to whether or not you've encountered this before, as we're having some trouble dealing with it. The vet has basically told us he doesnt want to operate in case it doesnt help, but right now my dog is practically lame in that he cant move without yelping and crying in pain, he pants when he's lying still and he's constantly shifting and looking like he cant get comfortable so he's obviously in constant pain.
I wonder if you have any idea as to why the vet would be so against operating when Bobby is obviously in so much pain? Or if you have any idea of the complications that can arise from this surgery?
Obviously I know you are not a veterinarian, I just wanted another opinion on the situation because I've gotten so upset about my poor puppy being in pain that I've convinced myself the vet just doesnt care!

Answer
I have had two cases of slipping patellas here, but the worst problem my dogs had with it was occasionally skipping as they trotted around the yard. Both lived to be fairly old.

In your case, your dog has a much more serious condition than my two did, and it seems obvious to me that something MUST be done to help him. If he were mine, I would opt for the surgery. It seems obvious that your vet is not interested in pursuing this and helping your dog (maybe he is not good with surgery?). I would find another vet ASAP and have your dog taken care of. Look for someone who specializes in orthopedic surgery or who can recommend an orthopedic surgeon for you.
