Our puppy is sick

Question
We have a 1 1/2 yr. old lab/heeler mix.  He's been getting sick lately and
we think it's because he's been eating grass.  We thought his system would
get used to it but it hasn't.  Is there anything we can do to keep it from
effecting him this way?  Or may it be something else causing his sickness?

Answer
Hi Ashely,

Actually many dogs eat grass because they enjoy it, just as many people crave a salad now and then.  The cause for concern lays with the possibility that the grass has been chemically treated.

Sometimes dogs eat grass when they have a mild stomach upset and usually they'll vomit soon after that, this has led to the belief that dogs eat grass when they're unwell to make themselves vomit. Eating unusual objects can arise from a dietary deficiency, so it' s a good idea to get them checked by a vet.

You said you dog has been sick lately, but you didn't say if he is still eating, having diarrhea, drinking water, or acting lethargic. You also didn't say if the dog is able to keep food down.

There are many things that can be irritating your dog's stomach, anything from too much rawhide to parasites. I'd be happy to continue this discussion if you would get back to me with a few more details, or you can call your vet's office and tell them the symptoms to see if they think an office visit is required.

Best of luck,

Patti
