Milk Bones and My Dogs Diet

Question
I just wanted to know; how much dog food do I subtract from the feedings when I give them the dog biscuits. For example I feed one of my dogs 3 1/2 cups of dog food a day as recommended by the dog food bag due to his weight. Due to his weight I need to give him 3 1/2 biscuits daily; but I'm noticing that he is a little heavier then most dogs. Should I cut some of the Dog food? Please let me know.

Answer

Hi Luis,

You don't have to feed your dog ANY treats, his regular dog food provides all the nutrition he needs. If your dog is gaining weight, you can cut back on the treats, or give him just half a treat (he doesn't know the difference), give him reduced fat treats, or give him an apple wedge (no seeds) or a baby carrot or two as a treat. Most dogs really love carrots and apples, they don't know that they're healthy and fat free. You could also increase the amount of exercise your dog gets each day, to prevent the weight gain. An extra lap around the block once or twice a day would really help with the weight, and your dog would enjoy it.

The feeding guidelines on the package are just that, a general guide. The amount you feed your dog can be a little more, or a little less than the amount printed on the package, depending on your particular dog's dietary needs. It's better to cut down on the treats, than to cut back on the dog food, though.

I hope that helps.
Best of luck,

Patti
