Question
I have a huskie/german shepard, 6 years old and a poodle/ cocker spaniel, 8 years old... Recently they have been knocking at the door to come in, when I get there, they turn and walk away.. What are they saying?? DO they want to play?? Or just want me to come outside with them...  Also the small one poops on my living room carpet..NO where else in the house. I had to replaced it for that reason, while there was no covering on floor, he did not poop there. As soon as I got new carpet, that very night he pooped on it... WHY?????  Please send answer, have tried three other persons on the net, with no success. Thanks for your help.Have a great day!

Answer
Lynne,

Sometimes I believe that our companions just want to say HI or check on us, of course that is just my theory. But I think that it would be a good idea for you to just take a couple of minutes when they do this, to scratch an ear, or pat a head.
As far as the "pooping" on the carpet, well, dogs learn preferences for different surfaces to urinate or defecate on, just like cats do. If a dog is allowed to establish a preference for indoors or on the carpet early in life (like if puppies are kept on carpet or indoors in their play area), they may prefer this surface for life. I have seen pets who prefer to use only the driveway, that seek out concrete and many pets who prefer paper, after being paper trained as puppies. This is the only reason I can think of for this sort of behavior, though.

Hopefully this has been of some help to you.

Good Luck!
