How can I tell if my pitbull is ok after birthing six puppies?

Question
A friend basically dropped off his pitbull at my house while she was pregnant because he had nowhere for her to live, and I am now caring for her.  The pitbull was pregnant and she gave birth to six puppies on Friday from 10 am to 6 pm.  She ate all the afterbirths.  It has now been about 48 hours since the births were finished.  The mom dog has been drinking a lot.  She is very attentive to her puppies and is producing milk.  All the puppies appear healthy and happy - they nurse and sleep all day.  My concern is for the mom dog.  She did not really want to eat after the birthing was finished.  She probably had her first bowl of food about 12 hours after delivery- I am feeding her puppy food because that's what I read was good for her while nursing.  After the one bowl she did not eat any more.  Today I went to get her some wet food to see if that would entice her to eat more, and wehn I got home to give it to her, she had thrown up.  Just once- but it was definitely the food from  yesterday.  I cleaned the area up, then gave the wet food.  She started eating immediately.  Is it ok that she threw up?  Should I be very concerned?  Her stool is exactly as I have read it should be but she seems a bit weak - although that is not surprising to me given that she is nursing six puppies round the clock and hasn't been taking in many calories.  I would love some feedback please!  I am planning on taking her to the vet but today is Sunday and I want information asap.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi,
Every bitch I have ever had, had gotten sick after eating the afterbirth so I don't let them have it anymore.  It has not seemed to make any difference.    Many times a mother dog will not eat after.  Keep her on the food she knows and add a little of the puppy food to it.    Check her temperature  it should be back to 101 by now.  If she is running a fever, then you know she has to go to the vet.  Although she should go anyway to make sure there are no left over puppies in there that could be making her sick.
If all turns out to be healthy and she is still not eating, make up some soft and dry food and smear it on the puppies backs.  Not too much at a time.   She will immediately clean the pup and she will be ingesting the food at the same time.   After doing this a few times, her appetite will usually return.
