Question
My wife and I are adopting two Shih Tzu's that are both three years old and brother and sister. What advice can you give us on handling these dog in our home?I.E, training, feeding, etc. They are both housebroken with no known medical problems. We have had dogs before, however they have been large dogs and kept outside.

Answer
As far as feeding:  when you get these dogs ask the person what they are feeding so you don't upset their stomachs.  Then make sure it is a premium food.  If not and you want to change it, do it VERY slowly,  a teeny bit added to the existing food each night.
Even though they are house broken, they will need to be RE housebroken in a new home.  Watch them carefully the first week to make sure they know they are not allowed to go to the bathroom in this new home and that it is now their den.  Dogs don't always generalize and must learn things as they experience them.  Prevention is worth everything here.
I would also take them to a Petsmart training class, not so much for training, but more for bonding.  Once the bond is there 99% of most problems dissolve.
