13 yr old jealous collie dog hates puppy

I have a 13 yr old collie dog named max. I got a new shih tzu puppy 8 weeks old called leo. My older dog max cant even look at it because its sooo scared. He has tried to snap it a few times but i stop it! He is a very jealous dog who is scared of everything. He does not like other dogs he has always taken a walk on the lead. He usually tries to fight with other dogs when we are out. We have bought a baby gate to seperate them for a while untill it gets used to leo. Do you think thats a good idea? Will my dog max ever get used to my puppy leo have you got a few tips which can help me? Thanks

Frankly, you should not have brought in a new puppy with such an old guy in the house. The puppy will pester him enormously, and as you said, Max already does not like other dogs. Max deserves his peace and his space, and I would let him snap at the puppy as he tells Leo to "STAY AWAY"... as long as he really isn't hurting the puppy. Old dogs have rights, and puppies never respect that. Many puppies will even go out of their way to pester old dogs just because they get a kick from it. As long as Max isn't too nasty with his puppy opinions, the puppy is the one that should be corrected when he starts to bug Max.

Yes, the babygate is a good idea until Max realizes that life as he knew it has changed. Be sure you continue to give Max his share of attention; maybe even give him more. New puppies either rejuvenate old dogs or drive them to the grave quicker.
