Type of dog to get

QUESTION: First I have to say that I have never owned a dog.  I have two children What kind of dog would be a good family dog?  We have a very large yard to play around in so space is not a problem.  A dog that would play with my children is what I am looking for.  What do you suggest? Thanks!
ANSWER: what kind of climate are you in?  what size dog are you interested in?  how old are your children?

QUESTION: I live in Louisiana so it's very warm.  I'd like a larger dog and my children are seven and five.

If you had dogs in the past, I would probably suggest a boxer.  They are wonderful with children and protective, too.  If you think you could handle a higher energy dog that would be the one to get.  They would have to come in on really hot days though.
Since this will be your first dog,  I'll suggest a golden retriever.  They are almost mistake proof.
If you want a smaller dog or medium dog, a Boykin Spaniel would be a good choice.  Or a small dog, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
