Question

Mimzy
Hi Shelley,
I have a two and a half year old chihuahua, Mimzy. Every night before bed (he sleeps with me) Mimzy goes on a licking frenzy, except he doesn't like himself, he licks me. It usually lasts for about five minutes or so and he is always beneath the covers and licks whatever skin he can find - usually my stomach or leg and then promptly tucks in for the night. The licking doesn't bother me at all, I am just incredibly curious as to why he would do this. I should add that I do treat him like he is my baby, and he is very MY dog versus a family pet. I do feel like I need to protect him more as he is 2.4 pounds, and very delicate. He isn't ever left alone, Mimzy goes to Gramma's during the day  just like the kids, so boredom can't be the culprit. I just cannot figure out the reasoning. Any insight?

Thanks so much!
:)

Answer
Hi Ava,

Thank you for writing to me.  I am in love with your dog!!!!  What a sweet boy he is!

It seems to me that Mimzy is licking as a gesture of affection and respect.  He may also be doing it as a self calming mechanism.  This rings especially true because you wrote that he tucks in for the night, "promptly."  You are a fabulous mommy.  Keep up the good work and give Mimzy a big hug and kiss from Auntie Shelley!
