anal bleeding

Question
I recently trimmed the hair around my dog's anus. He is a powderpuff chinese crested. I think I may have scrapped him with the blade, he keeps nipping and licking his anus. This morning when he went to the bathroom it started to bleed a little too. The blood seemed like it was coming from just outside of the opening. I have been putting neosporin on it, but should I take him to the vet?

Answer
Hello Nicole, No a trip to the vet should not be necessary, continue treating the area even with just Vaseline.  Your dog mostly needs the area to stop burning or itching just now.  There is little chance of infection. You may not have actually nicked your dog, but just the mere fact that you clipped that area may have irritated the skin, then the dog scoots on a carpet and gets rug burn, which can cause bleeding since the skin there is rather thin.  Continue treating for a few days with something soothing and all should be fine.  Next time you may consider scissoring that area.  Thanks for asking, Cindy Lou :)
