6 year old peek-mix peeing on the carpet

Question
Help!  Our dog, Sadie, has been peeing on the carpet for 2 years. I clean it everyday but she has destroyed it.  We are going to replace all the flooring in the house and if I can't get her to stop we are going to have to get rid of her.  I love her and the idea of not having her kills me.  How do I get her to stop doing this?  I don't think it is an issue of needing to go out.  She is doing it almost like she is marking her territory.  Any advice would be great!

Answer
First, have your vet examine her to make sure that there are no health issues like a bladder infection or stones. If that checks out okay, then you need to start housebreaking your dog from the beginning just as if you just brought an 8-week-old puppy into the house. http://www.cuhumane.org/topics/hseold.html

You need to put her in a crate when you cannot watch her or during the night. If she is going in a particular area that can be blocked off, such as another room, then put up a baby gate or something so that she cannot get in there. I would certainly limit her run of the house until things improve.

Some bitches do mark, but it is generally when there are other dogs around. I would also start practicing "Nothing in Life is Free" with her. http://k9deb.com/nilif.htm
