Question
My 1.5 year old poodle has had some odd feces the past 24 hours.  We feed her cooked food (chicken/rice/veggies) and this diet has for the most part been really good.  However, just recently shes had to go to the bathroom more often, but its still solid, and a yellowish/white color.

It seems really dry as well.  Could this be related to her diet, or perhaps something more serious.  She doesnt appear to be in any discomfort or acting any differently.

Should i wait to see if things get better, or go to the vet now?  Is this somewhat normal?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
It is quite possible you are failing to give her the complete and balanced diet she needs.  The lack of something in her diet, or the wrong balance of something could be catching up to her.   You may have the best of intentions, but many home made diets go wrong.  I would suggest changing her over to a chicken and rice kibble.  The dry food will give her teeth and jaws the exercise they may lacking in a cooked chicken and rice diet.  Contrary to what you have heard, most dogs thrive on most commercial chows.  I see too many healthy, active dog guides and other service dogs all of which are on a kibble only diet.  All the things I read about such diets just don't fit with the reality of what I see.  Take a look at the next service or guide dog you see out in public.  If you have a chance, ask the partner what they feed and how old the dog is.  Chances are it will be Iams, perhaps Pro Plan, Eukanuba, or even Purina 1.  Although they are larger breed dogs, they often are able to work until 10-12 years old.

What does your vet say about the diet?  Most vets are against home made diets.
