Potty training?

Question
Hi, I have an 8 week old Yorktese(Maltese and Yorkie mix). He is the sweetest dog and has been moderately successful with potty training considering his age. I am worried that he goes to the bathroom too frequently though. He will pee outside and then 10 minutes later inside. He also goes #2 a lot, as well. (3 times on his puppy pad last night alone. He is just getting over having a tapeworm and he's doing well to be going almost completely on the puppy pad at 8 weeks, it just seems excessive. I know he is young and small (only 1.5 pounds), but I am still concerned. His first vet visit is this Saturday for 9 week shots(the breeder gave him his first set) but I wanted to ask what your opinion was. I also ave a roomate that spanks him for going on the floor when I am not home. He has a dog that it worked well with. She NEVER goes on the floor and that's what he did with her. However, I am concerned because everything I read online says not to do this. I don't want my dog to have lasting effects on his personality because he is sweet and does seem to be on the sensitive side. He doesn't appear to be scared of my roomate at all though...?? I also remember my mother always training this way and our dogs never went in the house and weren't scared etc...??
I am also trying to teach him to obey me walking outside without a leash. I use treats to reward him for coming to me when I call. I don't want to have a dog that runs off immediately when the door is open that has to be chased down. Am I going about any of this the right way and should I be concerned about his frequency using the bathroom?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
Hi Brooke;
Tell your roommate to keep his $@^& hands off your dog.
You can beat an animla, and naturally they are not going to do what will get them hit.
You don't "train " them that way, you force them to submit out of fear.
It takes intelligence to train a dog. any idiot can hit them.
Just because one dog didn't have accidents because it didn't want to be hit is no reason the assume this "works".
Just because a dog doesn'r act scared doesn't mean it isn't.
The main point is, you don't HAVE to hit them to make them behave.
I used to spank my dogs, many years ago. That was the way everybody did it. i spankled them on their bottom, just as a few times I spanked my hildren on their bottoms, but I finally got smart enough to stop spanking dogs. Aniumals learn better that children do.
Spanking should be used only for MAJOR offenses. If you train a dog or cat properly, they don't commit major offenses. children however, sometimes will.
My children had maybe 3 or 4 spankings in their lives. My ittle Lhasa I have now did have one spanking.
He had the habit of scooting out the front door when it was opened, and running across the street. He would sit in the yard, and refuse to come back.
He is trained, but sometimes he is bull headed. I would have to go across the street and pick him up and carry him home. He would lie down so if I tried to put a leash on him, I had to drag him. that was not good.
I am old, and mostly disabled, and he is too heavy for me to carry that far, so it was necessary to get it stopped. Puting him in time out didn't work for that one thing, so once when he did it, I went across, picked him up and paddled his bottom and chewed him out all the way home.
I didn't hit him hard enough to even make him flinch, but he knew he had really plowed up a snake then, so he hasn't done it since. He will still scoot out the door, but he doesn't leave the yard, and he comes back when told to.
I never use treats to train.
I use only praise for a reward. I find that works best. They can do the cutsey things over and over to demand a treat, and drive you nuts.
I am not sure about the frequency of using the bathroom.
That is something you need to dicuss with his Veterinarian.
NOBODY is allowed to hit my dogs, AT ALL.
Not only do my dogs not go in the house, they actually help me housebreak rescue dogs I foster. They teach them to eat out of the same bowls with them, and to go out the doggy door to use the bathroom.
I do have an occasional accident with the foster dogs, but they soon catch on, more from my dogs showing them than my teaching them.
Petsmart and Petco have weekend obedience training classes, so does Man's Best Friend.
These are group classes. You handle our dog and a trainer teaches how to get the results you want.
these classes are really good for the dog and the owner as well. You not only learn how to train your dog, but you learn how to do it the easy way.
You can drop by a Petco or Petsmart when they are having class, and watch. You can see how they train and what they are accomplishing.
