Question
Hi

I have a couple issues with my 1.5 yr old Pom, she is crate trained due to our work schedules.

she is eating fine and has an over whelming need for water,, she will drink until she were going to explode.  She wont eat until about 30 mins later.  Is this normal?

Second, she has gone 2 days without pooping, and she has ate.  Recently she has taken up going in the house which if she is out of her crate; she is within sight so if she starts --I can take her outside.  However since she has started going in the house; she will not go poop outside.  SHe goes pee just fine.  Is there something I can give her to get her settled back down.
She also has take up the behavior that she STARES at you,, and will not stop,, if she doesn't have your attention she constantly stares, how can I break this behavior?  Or do I just have to try to ignore her because that is what she likes too do..

Answer
There could be physical issues for the drinking and fouling the house.  Start with a vet check, explaining the problem to him.  Ask about spaying if not already.  It should help behavior problems.

The staring is likely behavior, challenging you for leadership.  Eye contact is a big thing to dogs, last one to look away wins.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
