`Introducing a new pup to old dog

Question
QUESTION: I have a new Shi tzu  and the year old male Shitzu that i have will not accept the pup. Is there some way i can get them together? The male seems to be very agressive or dominating.

ANSWER: How old is he?  By 3 years, many dogs want nothing to do with puppies, their sharp little teeth, and biting games.  You just have to teach the puppy to leave the older dog alone.  As soon as you see it focusing on the older dog, or anything else it shouldn't chew, give it a sharp ''Ah, ah, ah!'' and offer it a chew toy.

QUESTION: the pup is four weeks old and the male is one year old.

Answer
Usually at that age they are happy to have somebody to play with.  Give him a little more time and better leadership.

The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
