Dog pension while on vacation

Question
Hi,

Any ideas on what I should be on the lookout for when I shop for a dog pension for my two dogs?  My sister and I have to travel for work in a couple of weeks and we dread leaving the dogs at some place where they will be neglected or abused or just left out in the rain...yeah, we're worry-warts!  Any tips on choosing a pension?

Thanks!
Grace

Answer
Hi Grace,

Thank you for contacting me regarding pet care for your two dogs.  Can I assume that you live across the "big pond" from me?  The only time I have heard boarding referred to as a "pension" was when I visited Madrid!  :)

Since I take care of dogs (www.bednbiscuit.com) I think that I will be able to make some qualified suggestions.

1- ask a multitude of questions.

2- visit the facility and ask to see all areas where your dog will be kept.

3- ask for at least 5 references and check them out...each and every one!

4- try to seek out a place, much like mine, that keeps a small number of friendly dogs in a real home as opposed to a 'kennel' which is a high stress situation for a dog.

5- ask about their vet...is there one nearby? is the vet available 24/7?

6- ask if someone is on the premises at all times?

7- do the dogs get exercised or do they just sit in a pen all day?

8- be certain that your dogs will be kept together.

9- bring their beds and a very smelly T-shirt (perhaps one that you have slept in overnight).  this keeps your dogs calmer and more confident.

10- finally...try to arrange for your dogs to visit the place you choose for them so that they are familiar with the owner, care takers and other dogs.  if possible, leave them there for a daycare prior to their longer stay.

Do not hesitate to ask me further questions should you run into additional concerns.

I just recieved your question and noticed that the date was 3 days ago.  I don't know what slowed down its transmission but I do apologize for the delay.

Good luck and have a wonderful time on your vacation!

Cheers,
Shelley Davis
