Fermale Shih Tzu Cold-Weather NON-Elimination

Question
Hi Renee,
I have a 1-year old Female-Pure Bred Shih Tzu. I adopted her a month ago from another family. The housebreaking has been successful, EXCEPT when its cold, wet/rainy outside. She simply WILL NOT eliminate in her regular spot in the yard. I have tried: Raincoat with boots, Wintercoat with boots, taking her for a walk to help warm up her body PRIOR to Elimination and of course: patience, patience, patience. She simply will not go until she's back indoors. She knows its wrong, and I understand it is cold outside, but I have taken every measure that I can think of to help keep her warm. Can you offer me any advice or shall I consult a Behaviorist/Trainer in my area?? Many thanks, Tina and Cookie :-)

Answer
Hi Tina and thanks for your question.

I guess she has learned that if she waits long enough, she'll be allowed to go back in. They can be very difficult at times, can't they :)

Some times we just have to wait them out and of course, REWARD them once they "go". I'm sure that after a few times of waiting,  she'll get the message that you are NOT going to let her go back in until she's taken care of business. Besides, she will get a reward if she goes!

If you have a behaviorist/trainer in your area, it would be a great idea to enlist their help in this matter. They can be very helpful and once they know your dog, can help you out with future problems as well.

Good luck!
