Hello, I own a 11 month old female unspayed black lab and am wanting to get a 6/8 week old female/male chihuahua puppy, I will be spaying the lab in mid spring and will be getting the puppy before spaying her. I am currently living with a friend that owns a 10 month old spayed golden retriver/yellow lab cross, my dog gets along well with her and vice versa, my questions are.......

Should the puppy be male or female? I pefer females, I've never owned a male dog before and my family has only ever owned one male dog which was an Amrican escimo and was unneutered,

My lab is a very gental dog and just loves my mothers two bichon/shiztuz's (both are spayed females) which come to visit, the goldenX however seems to bully the smaller dogs, I may not be living with this friend in the spring and may not have to worry about the goldenX but in case I am still living here..... how do I get the goldenX to not hurrase this tiny puppy? what disiple methods should be used?, also my lab and the golden get purina dog chow, they have a full dish avilible at all times, they are normal sized and not over weight or anything but I don't want to feed the new puppy like this I want to feed at saspific times during the day.... is there a way I can get my lab & the goldenX to eat at sertion times during the day?

Right now we have a huge yard(theres a truck parked in it, there are three crab apple trees, two big & one small and three other trees back there and there is still plenty of room) but as I said in the spring we may not be living here, my lab doesn't have a clue how to walk on a leash as we've always had the large yard and I've never really walked her..... she pulls like crazy when on a leash.... how can I teach her without using choke chains and prone collars how to walk and not run on the leash? we don't have m,any toys for the dogs as they have each other to play with and everytime we get a squeaky toy or rope it ends up in shreds.... the puppy would need some small stuffed toys and small ropes..... how can I teach the two larger dogs NOT to eat them?

I've never owned a chihuahau before and since theya re the worlds smallest dog... at 6/8 weeks they have to be very tiny..... how can I teach my lab and the goldenX to watch where there going and not trampel the pup?

And lastly my lab sleeps at the foot of my bed and has ever since I got her when she was a three month old matnurised pup.... I have never been able to allow a crying pup to sleep on the floor and found it was never nessairy and they always slept up on the bed with me..... now my bed is rather high off the floor and a tiny chihuahua pup would be bound to pee in my bed when it finds out it can't jump off without hurting its self...... should I go ahead and leave the pup sleep on the bed taking the risk of an actident? or should I try to let the pup sleep on the floor near the head of my bed in a tiny bed with a clock?

Thank you for your help in advance.

Hi Asks

Please be highly careful with the larger dogs getting a smaller breed to bring in.  I have many of my Shepherd pups in with all kinds of pets, but just got a call that not a year old Shepherd raised with a Boston attacked it about the throat, they tried to beat it off and finally got it to release and the Boston is fine except for some bite wounds to heal.
If a dog is wanting to truly kill another it goes for the stomach and usually one big bite kills it pretty quickly or causes alot of vet expense.
Now, I suggest u might want to wait to bring a tiny one into a lab, retriever, etc home until your sure where you are going to be for most medium sized dogs just hate little dogs.
This pup I sold at eight weeks had a wonderful temperment and loved the Boston but the Boston is continually picking and bickering until the Shepherds snapped or Cracked like a human would under pressure.  Now they are tortured to rid of their loved Shepherd they have put money into Obedience classes and to breed later or rid of the Boston that still runs to the larger dog.  It is now tied outside and I am highly upset as I do not sell any pups that they tie them, fence them in a yard and forget them, so I am about to email her I will post this gorgeous female for sale and get it out of that bad home atmosphere.  this is what I am telling you in so many words, it happens in seconds with tiny dogs and larger ones, u cannot turn your back.  fixed or not sexed or not does not matter.  Trust me I have plenty of experience with the sex of dogs together, of course I do not run my two breeding males together with five bitches, but  i run one with all five and I am in charge and thier leader and they know this and all dogs of any size or breed needs a Leader or Boss to teach right from wrong this lady did not do this and the Shepherd does not know what to do right or wrong only wrong for the present and she is a real beauty, makes me sick I feel I screen my people only to have an eamil like this one time in many litters.

Kind regards

Hello again and thank you for yuor help, I have decided that I would rather get a jack russle terrier pup, if I bring it up with my lab they should get along as adults correct? what you have discrbed is nothing like my lab she loves my mtohers smaller dogs and trys to play with tehm but with them being 6/7 years old they run away or growl, when the one growls my lab just backs off a bit then stars at her wagging her tail...... the other is more likely to play but she has to be in the mode or its a no go, when I first got my lab she and the two bichon/shiz-tuz's woulds all run as fast as they could around the yard, barking at each other during there play... it was quite intersting, with the golden in the house I will need to be quick to jump to my feet and to try to teach her to just leave the alone..... do you think if she starts bothing the tiny pup if I pup her outside for about five minutes then bring her in...... do you think this could be a punishment for huraseing the pup? my friend is stright with her but he isnt home offen which will leave more of the work to me, I am home most of the day everyday so I have lots of time to try to fix any problems that happpen, I am going to attempt to get my lab to sit, lay down and stay before bringing the puppy home as this I think will greatly aid in getting used to the pup without harming it, the golden will, sit and stay if you look her in the eyes.... she seems to submit to anyone rather easy for instanst you can walk up to her and just look her in the eyes and she'll go belly up. I am wondering which dog of the two is domanate...... both play pin each other and each will eat borofe the other.... is there a way to find out which is domaat?

Thank you in advance for any further help,

HI AGAIN
U MIGHT NOT YET HAVE A DOMINANT ONE AND THANK GOD U DO NOT HAVE FOR IT IS CONSTANT BICKERING U NEED TO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON.
THE BICKERING CAN PROVOKE A REAL FIGHT, IF THEY GET ALONG AND LISTEN TO YOU, THEN U DO NOT ALWAYS GET A DOMINANT DOG.  MY MALE, GINO IS THE DONINANT BREEDER HERE, KEEPS THE GIRLS IN TACT AND ALSO IS HIGHLY OBEDIENT IN THE TRAINING WE USE HERE.
THE JR'S ARE HIGH ENERGY DOGS AND DO NEED SOMETHING TO DO OR IT WILL CHEW YOUR PLACE APART.  THEY ARE CUTE, JUST NEED TONS OF EXERCISE.  WHAT I WOULD MAYBE THINK OF DOING IT TEACHING THE DOGS TO BE HOOKED ONTO A BIKE AND GET THEM ALL DONE AT ONCE.
U CAN GET DOG HOOK UPS AND THEY TROT ALONG WITH YOU AS U GET SOME EXERCISE AND THEY GET MORE THEY NEED DAILY.  IT IS ALMOST BETTER THAN JUST A WALK, FOR THE JR WILL NEED TO RUN.
JUST KEEP AN EYE ON EACH DOG AND SEE WHO IS BOSS.  WHO GRABS THE TOY, BONE OR WHATEVER AND WHICH ONE WALKS AWAY, THAT MOST LIKELY WILL BECOME THE BOSS ONE DAY IF NOT ALREADY, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR DOGS DO WELL TOGETHER SO I WOULD NOT BE CONCERNED RIGHT NOW TILL U GET THE PUPPY HOME.  KEEP A VERY CLOSE EYE FOR GRACI WAS RAISED WITH A BOSTON OF 6 OR 7 YEARS OLD, WHATEVER PROVOKED HER TO GRAB HER ABOUT THE THROAT AND JODI COULD NOT BEAT HER OFF.  IT HAS NOW MADE HER SO LEARY OF HER DOG SHE ADORED AND IT WAS IN OBEDIENCE SCHOOL AND ALL, BUT WHEN A DOG GETS MAD....FORGET IT.  THAT IS THE SAYING, DOGS GET MAD, PEOPLE GET ANGRY.
THE BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR PACK.  IF U NEED FURTHER HELP, JUST HOLLER.

Thank you very much for your help, I have decided to get a jack russle terrier insted as they are slightly larger, more active and would fit better into my lifestyle. I am going to get the pup while I'm living here as I may not be out or here until early summer/late spring, the goldens owner isnt home offen so I'd be trying to keep them apart until they get used to each other, I know that the golden doesnt like the smaller dogs that much and I'm not sure why but I know for sure that my lab would love it as she just loves my mothers dogs and she knows when they don't want to play but will still pester around them a bit trying to get them to play with her. I am attempting to train my lab in home somewhat before the pup arives as I don't want my lab bouncing all over the place when the pup's here, the golden will sit or lay down or even go belly up if you stare her in the eyes so she won't be a big hassle, how can I teach both large dogs that this pup is much smaller then them and can't be bitten/pinned down like there large friend can because they will hurt it? My lab will be sitting & staying by the time I bring the puppy home, the other dog is untrained but will sit/lay down/go belly up if stare her in the eyes.

When I bring the pup home how do I introduce it to the larger dogs? I know that my lab wouldn't hurt it but I don't really trust the goldenx so I'd need to get someone to hold the goldens collor or something while she sniffs the new pup.... after she sniffs it and we see her reaction.... would it be safe to put the pup down with her still being held by her collar?

Also my friend also has a cat, this cat swats the dogs just for going near it.... how would this work with the new pup? I would have to scold the cat by telling it no to pervent him from doing it again... thou it hasnt worked yet. Also my mother coems to visit quite offen with her two little dogs.... how should I introduce the pup to them?

Thank you for any help you can give.

Answer
HI ASK
OH MY WATCH THE CAT DOES NOT PUT THE PUPPIES EYES OUT FOR IT IS GOING TO BE SNOOPING EVERYWHERE AND DOES NOT KNOW ANY BETTER THAN GO UP TO A CAT.?
ALSO, KEEP A VERY CLOSE EYE ON ANY ADULT DOG WITH A NEW PUPPY, IT WILL HAVE NOT KNOWLEDGE OF THE OUTCOME OF BEING KILLED BY A JEALOUS ADULT.
KEEP A LEASH ON THE GOLDEN AT ALL TIMES AND FOR AT LEAST A WEEK DO NOT TAKE YOUR EYES OFF IT.  IT ONLY TAKES SECONDS TO TAKE THAT LITTLE PUP BY THE NECK OR STOMACH.  IT IS ALL OVER THEN.
IT IS VERY CHANCEY WITH NEW PUPPY AND ADULTS, I WOULD NEVER TELL YOU IT IS SAFE WHEN I CANNOT THINK WHAT THE ADULTS HAVE IN THEIR MINDS.  BE VERY CAREFUL AND I WISH YOU THE VERY BEST OF LUCK.  TAKE IT SLOW WITH PATIENCE AND LOVE THEM ALL.
