Question
QUESTION: My 1 year old IG is having a hard time understanding the concept of potty training.  She has been crate training for the past year and does ok.  In the few weeks, my boyfriend has returned from his opera tour and has broken her routine of being kenneled from 7-12, then 1-5.  Since then, her "accidents" have been uncontrollable.  She only messes in her kennel or in her bed next to the sofa (this is rarely though), never on the carpet.  She was purchased in a pet store and I know training is harder because of that.  I have received several suggestions about removing bedding from the kennel or penning her with a pee pad and other such things.  I was told that kennel training was the best and most effective, was I misled?  I feed her 1 cup dry food once a day in the afternoon, is that too much/ too little?  She is by no means too skinny or fat, but she does poop a lot!  She is on the limited ingredient diet, but I don't know if it makes a difference.  Thank you for your help!

ANSWER: Petshop dogs are often messed up in some way.  Infuture go to a breeder.  In my country petshops arent allowed legally to sell cats or dogs.

I dont think you are feeding her enough honestly,  but I do not know about the brand you are using.

I would also say that crate training is the most effective,  and yes remove all bedding.

How often do you take her on walks?

Also I would get her vet checked,  as at one year old,  there should be no accidents at all.  Most of my pups have been toilet trained at 10 weeks,  12 max.

Tell me what you think,  and I can go further into it.

:-)

QUESTION: She goes out 4 times a day 630, 1230, 1630, and 2200.  Another issue I suppose might be that I did not get her until she was 16 weeks old, she was the last of her litter, probably because she is black with no unique markings.  She was spayed at 6 months of age, I knew I did not want to breed her, but I have always wanted an IG.  She was just seen at her vet for her anal glands and the vet said she was doing great health wise, she is current on all vaccines.  The main question I am wondering about is that she was doing pretty perfectly until my boyfriend came home and ruined her routine by letting her out of her kennel at odd times.  Since we do not have a yard of our own she has learned to be on a potty schedule, but with him taking her out at strange times, I think she is confused.  And now it is like she is rebelling to being in the crate.  I suppose it would take a few weeks to get her back on her routine again.  Does this make sense?

Answer
Yes completely.  Dogs are very much creatures who like routine,  and expect things to happen at a rough time. When you say kennel,  what do you mean?  Is it a crate? Or an actual kennel?

Or possibly you can try to ditch the kennel? If you say she rarely goes anywhere else.  Perhaps its time to try her without it?
