i have a 5 lb toy rat terrier, I'm unsure if i need to go ahead & set up a c-section delivery for her or what. she is very small boned. we do have a wonderful vet close by.

I would recommend taking her to your vet for an ultrasound or radiographs to see how many puppies she's carrying.  It can also give them an idea of how big they are.  Small dogs definitely have more of a chance of needing a caesarian than larger breeds, but not always.  If this is her first litter, there is definitely a higher chance that she will have complications, also if she is very young.  Unless you want to have her spayed at the same time she has the puppies, I wouldn't schedule a caesarian unless there is absolutely no way she can have a natural birth.  Congratulations and good luck!
