Question
I have a 10 year old black lab. Yesterday my daughter noticed that her back to nipple area's are swallon. Any suggestions as to why this might be happening. I have never noticed this before, but who's to say this may have occured without me being aware of it. She seems not to be uncomfortable. I have not noticed anything unusual about her behavior.Thank You Debbie

Answer
Hello Debbie and thanks for your question.

Is your dog be fixed?

Does the swelling come and go or is it there are the time?

Is the swelling located on one side OR both sides?

Here are a couple of ideas, but not knowing more background, it's hard to give a more definative answer.

It could possibly be some type of fatty tumor that has developed in the breast tissue. This is not unusual, but is more common in bitches that are unaltered. Mammory tumors are sometimes malignant, but not always.

If you dog is intact (not been spay'ed), it could be a precluding sign that she is getting ready to come into heat.

Another idea would be she may have lost a little bit of weight and this area is a bit saggy, which can give the impression of swelling, since the area now has more definition.

You may want to take her in to have this checked, just to make sure it's nothing and to ease your mind.

Hope this helps a little :)
