One year old dog training

Question
Hi my girl friend and I have a chawawa/jack russell. She is very hyper and we have trouble even getting her to sit still to clip her nails. When she isn't too hyper she will sit, lay down, and roll over. She is also potty trained for the most part. How can we go about getting her to calm down some in order to take care of some her basic functions. I hope clipping of her nails isn't under the medical category because I really need some help with this. She can be calm at times but it seems like it is only when she wants to be. Please give any adivce/suggestions you have regarding these matters. Thank you veyr much for your time!!

Kyle

Answer
I think more exercise is too often suggested, but this sounds like a case for it.  Oh, the more you walk her on pavement, the less nail clipping she needs.

Obedience training helps.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
