Question
HI MY NAME IS SAN AND MY POMERANIAN HAS CAME IN HEAT ONCE AND I WANT TO KNOW WHEN WILL SHE COME BACK IN HEAT IT WAS SEPTEMBER

Answer

Hi San,

Most dogs have a heat cycle twice a year, every six to seven months. However, this can vary, and some dogs only cycle once a year while others come into season on a quarterly basis. Unfortunately, it's not something you can mark on your calendar and expect on a specific day. If your dog's last heat cycle was last September, you would have expected to see her come into season again in March or April of 2009.

It may be that your particular dog is amongst group who have a heat cycle once a year. If your dog hasn't had her heat cycle again by October, you should have her examined by your vet to rule out any problems.

Your dog can still gain important health benefits by having her spayed now, before the onset of her second heat cycle. Besides the obvious benefit of removing the possibility of unwanted litters of puppies, spayed at a young age a female dog experience a greatly reduced chance of mammary or breast tumors as they age, and removes the possibility of deadly uterine infections known as pyometras.

There are many reduced cost spay clinics, contact your local Humane Association or animal shelter to see if they can recommend one, or contact your regular veterinarian.

Best of luck,

Patti
