How to get my dog to gain weight

19 13:39:57

Question
I have two German Shorthair Pointers and we recently moved to a place that has some land and invisible fence.  It really has been wonderful for the dogs.  They love it!  It has helped settle them down.  My new problem is they have always been lean, but because of all the excerise they are really losing weight rapidly.  The one is so thin it makes me a nervous mom.  I feed them the Nutro Natures choice high energy for two years.  They are both 3 years old and I am certain it has nothing to do with health , just lots of excerise.  What can I do to put some weight back on them!

Answer
Hi Darby;
First make sure they are underweight.
You should be able to feel their rib cage when you run your hands down their sides, but not be able to SEE their ribs.
I feed Nutro Natural Choice for senior dogs, because mine are in that age range.
Sounds like you are feeding the right food for them.
If they are truly underweight, increase the amount they eat, or add an extra feeding at night, when they will absorb more calories while they are at rest.
Have they had a recent worm check to make sure they don't have flea tapes or another worm that could be thinning them out.
Go to this site and check their weight.
There is some really good advice on that site about health maintenance and feeding.   www.dogage.com
