Answer
Hi Philip,

You don't say how long your dog has been doing this.  It may not be anything but there is an article that you should read about gastric torsion.  It is common in large breed dogs and excessive salivation is one of the signs.
Please read this article, then you can judge whether or not your dog is displaying any of the other symptomns related to this disorder.  This will be your guide as to whether or not you need to take your Dane to the vet.
Go here:

If you dog does not display any of those symptoms and you feel reasonably sure that is not the problem, then you may want to check around and see if there is anything he/she may have ingested that is out of the normal.  Has he/she been subjected to any insecticides outdoors?  Check very carfefully for anything out of the ordinary.  If it continues, you may want to take a trip to the vet just to rule out anything toxic.

I hope this helps.

God Bless,
Becky
