Adopting 3 year old .... to housebreak?

Question
Hi, i will be adopting a 3 year old Harrier shortly from a local shelter.  He has been there for about 6 months and is kept in his own crate.  He doesn't seem to go to the washroom in his crate, but when he gets out and before he gets outside (like in the hallway) he will start peeing.  I expect that this will happen when i bring him home.  I will be keeping him in a crate while i'm out of the house since he seems fine with that.

My question is, what is the best approach in dealing with a dog who pees between the crate and outdoors?  How's the best way to train him to wait until he is fully outdoors before he goes?  Also, when he gets outside he pees often - likely from being in a crate for several hours - is that normal ?  (off and on for 10 minutes or so?)

Answer
It might be a good idea to have the crate closer to the door, and to take him out a little more often

And it is normal for males to pee a lot when outside-as well as having to go,males also 'mark' but get him fixed and it will reduce that problem, and it might stop him going in between the crate and outside
