Howling in the crate

Question
Hello, my husband and I just recently got an Italian Greyhound, she is a year old, and we crate her when we are away and when we go to bed at night. The first night we tried to have her in the kitchen while we went to bed, but she started howling. We waited till she stopped, then moved her into our bedroom so she could hear us breathing. She doesn't howl as much, but she does move around and bark a bit when she is in our room. We tried ignoring her noises, but we live in a suite, and our Landlords can hear her noise. We also tried to shake a can with coins in it when she made noise, which helped somewhat. Because she moves around a lot, she is keeping us awake, so we are trying to slowly move her out of our bedroom, but she does not like that and howls for about 15-20 min. Do you have any suggestions we can try? She is very quite when she is out of the crate, but once in it she can make a decent amount of noise for a little dog!

Answer
Hi Marg,

In all honesty, get yourself and your husband earplugs, and keep your dog crated in your bedroom. In a week or two you won't need to use the ear plugs, as your puppy will have learned this essential lesson.

Make sure your puppy is getting plenty of exercise at some point during each day. A tired puppy is less likely to fuss at night.

Best of luck!
