protective with new toys

Question
I have a male mix, coon hound. He is about 11/2year old and seems to be very protective with his toys, when we buy something we always get 2, because we have a 3yr puggle male. The coonhound, growls and leaves the room which he is in, to get away even if nothing is near him, cats or dogs! If we come near him, he is alittle quite, but still growls, we get a little nervous, because we aren't to sure yet about his temperament, is there something we can do, that will help him stop being so jealous or protective? we have already tried the no! route, and praise route, but he just doesn't care when it comes to toys, that are new! Thank you

Answer
You need to get this dog into obedience classes for a few months and work with him every single day. You should also start practicing "Nothing in Life is Free" with him (both of the dogs, actually). http://k9deb.com/nilif.htm

If he gets protective with his toys, then remove them. Let him have something for a short time, and then put it away. Toys are earned; they are not owned by the dog. The people own EVERYTHING.

Your dog may need a bit more time to adapt to his new family, but know that some animals are never good around other animals. Have patience and continue working with him, and he should come around in time.
