Question
Hi!  Maybe you can hlep me with my "problem" daschund.  First, he is a GREAT family pet.  He is excellent with my two young boys and would let me kiss him, pick him up, pet him all day if I wanted to! The kids can get right in his face, on the floor with him, etc. and he is fine.  BUT....... he is deathly afraid if a stranger, mostly male, comes in the house.  I have to keep him on a leash or locked in another room.  He becomes an "attack" dog and it is so stressful for me!  I am afraid to have people over for fear of how the dog will act.  When we have kids over he is great, no problems.  When their parents come to pick them up, he has to be locked in the bedroom.  I had a trainer come out to the house to work with him and the dog barked at him for the whole hour he was over.  He's only one and I can't live like this for another 10 years.  How do I break this w/o risking a guest being bitten?  Are those "barking" collars effective, or just inhumane?  Thank you Nancy!(MY NAME TOO!)

Answer
Nancy...it is really hard to answer this question here without being in front of your dog or seeing what exactly you do or say to him. But..what do you say when he is on the leash and starts to go crazy? Do you assure him by saying "it's ok" or something similar? Cause if you do, he hears...its ok..keep going crazy. Also...locking the dog away is bad ...the dog will start associating people with being locked up. I think you need a GOOD trainer...the one you had probably wasnt really a trainer and just claimed to be. A good trainer will be able to handle the dog the first lesson. Look for references and check the BBB. Good luck
