Excessive Sniffer

Question
I have a 2 year old Vizsla who has started sniffing in my backyard so much that his nose is sore and bleeding.  I have taken him to the vet and they have no idea why.  They did give me some ointment for him but that obviously won't stop him from sniffing.  Do you have any suggestions as how to stop him from sniffing so much.  It is almost like he has OCD that is all that he wants to do.  We won't even play anymore.  I would appreciate any thoughts or ideas you might have to help him.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi, Patrick,

I can only wager a guess - maybe there are smells in the yard that he finds irresistable.  Maybe try having him wear one of those cage muzzles when he's outside (I assume you don't leave him out alone for long periods of time).  That way he could still smell, but his nose wouldn't come in contact with the irritants, such as pictured here:

If he truly does have OCD, you may want to consider some type of medication.  This is something you would need to talk to your vet about, or if necessary, consult another physician.

Here are some articles that may be helpful.
