urinating in the home

Question
I have adopted a 9 month Yorkie. The old owner assured me the dog was potty trained. I have had Bentley for 7 days and I take him outside like clockwork and he just pees and poops in my home. I found 3 times he peed on my kitchen table on my center piece!!!!!!! On my table there was pee!!!! I am so upset over this peeing. I do not understand why he is doing this. Even the old owner was shocked and felt so bad. She said she had no potty problems. If I can not get him trained I am going to sell him. I do not want to do this but I can not deal with this. I have 2 dogs that stay outside and get crated at night because I can not get them to stop peeing inside so I do not want to get rid of him. We do love him and I am going nuts.   Thanks! Mary :}

Answer
This sounds like a leadership problem.  You are letting them walk over you.  Start by spay/neutering the lot if not already.  Then take charge.

The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
