Dog Breeding Age

Question
When is a dog considered too old to have puppies generally ?

Answer
Hi Pam,

In the same way that there is a recommended age for the first pregnancy, there is also a recommended age for the last one.  Most breeders agree a female dog shouldn't be bred after she is six years old, possibly seven, depending on how many litters the dog has had over over lifetime.

Dogs do not go through a period of menopause, as people do. A female dog can become pregnant into old age! If there is any chance your mature female dog could get pregnant, she should be spayed.

Best of luck,

Patti
