Rapid weight gain

Question
I have a 3 year old toy poodle.  Has always been very small, about 7 pounds tops.  I have noticed a fairly rapid weight gain, however it is all over, not just in his stomach.  Does that mean a serious problem or is he just eating too much.

Answer
Hi Jill,

Unexplained rapid weight gain or a sudden potbellied appearance signals a problem. A malfunctioning thyroid gland can lead to weight gain, especially in dogs. Your dog needs to be examined by your vet to determine what exactly is causing him to gain weight.

Miniature Poodles are prone to develop thyroid problems, so this definitely should be ruled out.

Best of luck,
Patti
