Beagles-mommy and son

Question
I have a 1 1/2 year old female tri-color beagle who is the mother of my 3 1/2 month old male tri-color beagle.  Momma is probably coming into heat again within the next couple weeks.  Is it still going to be safe to keep them together?  When will my male be ready to mate?  Cause if he is ready soon then I think that it might be a good idea to keep them separated till she is through heat.  He is already trying to mount her, but I am guessing that has more to do with dominance than him wanting to mate. I definitely dont want to end up with some inbreeding.

Answer
Hi there-

Technically, a male is able to breed as early as 14 weeks, meaning they are producing viable sperm. Most males do not get the urges to breed until they are older, say, 8-10 months, but I have seen on numerous occasions people bring me siblings who are 4 months old that bred together because they never thought to seperate them. I have also heard of a son re-breeding the mother at her first heat after whelping.

I would keep them seperated or neuter, one or the other!

Good luck!
