QuestionI have a 3 month old Yorkie/Maltese mix that I purchased from a breeder. He has very thin (or very short hair/peach fuzz)on the outer flaps of his ears- they feel like velvet. He typically lets his ears flop down but when active they are folded back or perk up. Not sure if he will hold them erect- Maybe when he is older? He has hair around the edges of his ear. His ears were like this when we brought him home when he was 12 weeks. I have had him checked by a vet and they ruled out any infection or allergy. I have also had him seen by groomers and they all have said they have never seen such thinning on the ears of a puppy only on older dogs. The breeder was feeding him Puppy Chow- I changed his food recently to Eukanuba puppy food and give him a boiled egg yoke weekly. I wanted to know if his ears will stay "velvety" or if there is something I can do to facilitate hair growth?
Thank you in advance for your advice.
AnswerHi, yes there are some things you can do if it is NOT genetics.
1 get him a vitamin/MINERAL supplement.
2 get him omega 3 fatty acids and put on his food or give him half a pill.
3 you have already improved his puppy food, but Eukanuba is sometimes hard for a puppy that size to chew. If you find he has trouble chewing that, you can switch him to Bill Jack puppy food.
4 make sure you brush every day for at least 2 minutes.
All these things will help if it is not genetic. I would get those vitamin minerals right away.
and the omega 3.
Don't get discouraged, the omegas should start to work in about 3 weeks, the vitamin minerals take up to 3 months to work.. This is because it must rebuild the bodily structure in the bones and blood stream first before it gets to the hair follicles
