Question
Hi Karen,

I have a miniature schnauzer who is 6 months old now. I bought her when she was 3 months old, she is doing fine with her puppy chow from pedigree and drinking water at first. 1 month later, she start to have a soft stool just like an ice-cream and have poop few times per day(i think she has diarrhea). Then, i took her to the vet and the doctor recommend us to give her some chicken breast with rice, she seems improve a lot but since then, she stop drinking water, when i try to feed her, holding the bowl to feed her water, she hesitate and try to run away from it. But when i feed her ice cube, she eat the ice so can you tell me what i should do? ice cube is not enough for her water intake, also, what kind of dry food you recommend for sensitive stomach?

Your quick respond will be highly appreciated!
karen

Answer
Ice cubes make great treats for a dog; mine love them! I also use them when a dog has an upset tummy and I am trying to get its digestive tract back on track (I give one every hour until the dog is leaving water in its bowl... and then I switch over to small amounts of water.).

Moisten her kibble with a bit of warm water, and that should help with her water intake. Most schnauzers don't drink more than a cup or so of water a day. Maybe she doesn't care for the dish her water is in? You might try a different type of bowl. And be sure that the bowl is cleaned on a regular basis to avoid bacteria-buildup, which can put some dogs off.

A good food is protein-based (first ingredient)... preferably a specified meat meal (ie. chicken meal). In her case, I would look for a food with a lower fat content, and a minimum of ingredients. Chicken and rice diets usually work well for sensitive stomachs.

Be sure to take in a stool specimen on a regular basis to check for parasites.
