Indoor Dog

Question
I'd like to get a dog. I'm a male, single, live alone in a house with a moderate size yard and am only a block away from a park. But despite all that, I was interested in knowing what indoor dog was best to have.

Answer
Hi Julian, when it comes to deciding what kind of dog to get, you need to make a couple of choices:

1.  How big of a dog do you want?  A large dog can require just as much or as little work as a little dog.  They are easier to housebreak, but when they go through destructive phases, they are a lot more destructive.

2.  Type of coat - A long-haired dog requires more grooming & upkeep than a short-haired dog, which can mean more expense over the lifetime of the dog.

3.  Then you need to decide on breeds.  Some breeds are more hyper than others and require more work, training etc.  Also, some can be more stubborn than others.

The best thing to do once you decide on large or small, short-haired or long-haired is to go through the breeds on the American Kennel Club website and see what suits your fancy.  Then contact breeders to learn about the breed, their good points & faults.  Do some really good research so you find just the right dog for your situation.

Hope this helps,

Dawn
