First puppy hair cut

Question
HI, I have a toy poodle who is about 6 months old now. He has never had a hair cut. Many people tell me he doesn't look very poodlely and say he look more Bichon or Coton. He is very fluffy but not curly and I have papers for him that say he is a poodle of pure poodle stock, His hair more closely resembles a white shearling fleece. I am wondering is it time for a first hair cut? He has no mats and tolerates daily brushing and primping, he is proud and smart and a very happy dog (people say he marches when he walks) but I wonder have I botched the chance of getting that great poodle coat I so wanted when I brought him home.

Answer
Hello Lynne, I usually suggest a first puppy haircut at about 4 months, not because they need it necessarily, but just to get them used to the clippers and the process.  You have not botched up his great poodle coat.  As a matter of fact, some poodles can take up to 2 years to fully get their adult "Poodle" coat in.  As long as you are able to keep him from matting, then let the hair grow, I would however take him in for his feet, face, tail and tummy clipping.  Just request the groomer to leave his body hair if you like it.  If his hair is long enough start pulling his top knot hair up just as the show poodle dogs do, it really is quite regal looking.  I hope this helps, oh yes by the way he should also have general maintenance done, such as his nails, ear hair plucking and anal glands expressed, your groomer will be familiar with this.  Thanks for asking, Cindy Lou :)
