Question
Hi, my 16 week old Doberman Pinscher is very ill.
Here goes: (This week)
On Tuesday, he was fine for the day. At night, he had a softer stool than usual.
On Wednesday, went to the vet for Boosters, mentioned the soft stool. Was told to wait and to keep an eye on him. Got home and he vomited at least 4 times, was shaking and had a very very soft stool-not liquid. At which point I took away his food for 24 hours and started him on boiled chicken/rice/pumpkin (after 24 hours).
On Thursday, was alarmed. Called the vet... Puppy still lethargic but accepting food and drinking water.
Friday, vet. Brought stool sample. Tested positive for Roundworms. Given dewormer pills. Gave first dose yesterday. All is fine, still a soft stool. No vomiting and no sign of any dead worms in stool. Started to slowly add kibble to bland diet.
Saturday (today), puppy is fine in the morning with kibble in bland diet. Soft stool. At around 4pm, 3 episodes of vomiting/shaking and a more liquid stool.

I need help. I am starting to think these symptoms are not from Roundworms.

Answer

Hi Gen

You don't always see dead worms in a dog's feces after administering a dewormer medication. The dewormer only only kills adult worms in the intestinal tract, so your dog will need a repeat treatment in about 2 weeks, as new worms will have hatched by then. After that, your dog should have another fecal test to confirm that he is worm free.

It's entirely possible that your dog has an upset his stomach and/or intestinal tract after getting the dewormer medication. Many dogs experience an upset stomach, diarrhea, and vomiting after deworming. Your dog may even have a lack energy or appetite just as he might if had have a mild reaction to a vaccination. While mild symptoms are nothing to worry about, you should call your veterinarian if this behavior lasts more than a day or two. Most dogs feel better about 24 hours after worming.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
