Question
Please help! 2 days ago I adopted a dog that was abused, not realizing he is a walker coonhound. He goes crazy at night to get outside into the woods and I just want him to calm down. I walk him in the AM and at lunchtime when I come home from work, then at night. But at night he gets incredibly wound up and stressed about being in. Walking him after dark is also chaos! Can you tell me what to do to help him? BTW, good for you and the vet asst course!  I am taking the same, about 1/3 through so far. Hope you do well with it. Anyhow any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Sharon J.

Answer
Dear Sharon

It's impossible to diagnose behavioral problems by email but I can give you a starting point.

I had a similar experience when I adopted an Australian Cattle Dog. When all the traditional, which at the time was all dominant training, I found C.W. Meisterfeld training philosophy. By training it with mutual respect and taking my time I was able to correct the behavioral problems save him.

It won't be a quick fix but a minimum of eight weeks of  progression towards a obedient pet

I will give you the best source, I know of, to help you answer your question. You need to be aware of the three main causes of dog behavior problems in order to help the dog.. They are improper training, improper relationship and lack of training.

You will need to undo what the previous training (or lack of) has done with reprogramming. Dr. Meisterfeld's book Jelly Bean versus Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde explains rage type behavior the detrimental effects of improper training techniques.

PS I have found veterinarians unwilling and unable to help with behavioral problems unless they can sell drugs to dog owners. They refer you to a animal behaviorist or a local trainer. Do a search on the web for C W Meisterfeld
